ARTIST STATEMENT: Output 2 "Shifts2"
What: Shifts2 is a non-representational piece made with acrylic painting on a one-eighth illustration board. A “shift”, according to the artist, is a hypomanic episode or the “highs” that he feels every so often. There are two kinds of shifts, the shift that inspired the piece is one of the more negative or bad-feeling ones.

Why: Shifts2 was one out of three art studies done as an exploration of trying to put onto paper what mania and depression felt like from the artist’s personal standpoint. These episodes can’t be described sometimes and this was mostly an attempt to visualize the feeling and an excuse to experiment with the materials that the artist had left lying around.

How: As this was the second installment of the non-representational art series, the elements of art were also randomly picked but the only difference was the song choice. For this piece, it was Kero Kero Bonito’s “Only Acting”. The artist made sure to not use water in any of the installments of this series. And as much as possible, a paintbrush was avoided for the painting of Shifts2 (though not completely followed). Instead, two protractors were used, mostly by applying paint on the edge and carefully making boxes on the board.
